What is the MGF?

We are the Southern hemisphere’s largest annual classical guitar festival and competition. This festival cements the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music as the centre of guitar in Australia, who are the main festival sponsors. Held at the historic Melba Hall, guitarists from all over the world converge to be part of this festival weekend.

Guitar luthier displays, Concert Artist competition, free masterclass viewing, presentations, concerts and complimentary beer, wine and cheese during intermission for the evening concerts! What are the performance competitions?

The Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced categories showcase Australia's best emerging talent.  

Players compete for cash prizes for each category, and the main prize for this year's Advanced Category is a handmade concert guitar by Andrew Doriean ($6800 value).

Our International Concert Artist Competition sees some of the world's finest players converge to compete for a first prize valued at approximately $9000 ($1000 cash plus a paid Australian Concert Tour in 2019).

The easiest option would be the $8 parking about 50m from Melba Hall.  

But make sure you purchase and display your parking ticket BEFORE you leave the carpark. 

Royal Parade Car Park  

Entry: Via Royal Parade, located between Genetics Lane and Medical Road (beneath Kenneth Myer Building). Hours: Monday - Sunday 6:00am to 10:00pm Fees and charges: $12.00 for 4 hours, or $25.00 for all day. $8.00 after 5:00pm Monday to Friday and weekends. Payment Options: Purchase a day ticket from the pay machine and display it clearly on the dashboard of your vehicle. Pay machines are located on each of the four levels of the car park next to the lift foyer. Signage at all exit points indicates their position For assistance: Please use the intercoms located near the pay machines next to the lift.
