Among Australia’s most active guitar programs, the concert will feature UWA students ranging from second year undergraduate to Masters candidates and alumni. The highly varied program has something for everyone, from the Baroque masterpieces of Bach to 21st century works by living composers. The centrepiece will be an ensemble performance of Nigel Westlake’s “Six Fish”, a striking work inspired by Gould’s Book of Fish. Westlake employs a dobro and 12-string guitar in addition to standard classical guitars, using their unusual timbres to create six unique depictions of Australian sea creatures – from the aggression of a sling-jawed wrasse, which traps prey in a mouth that can extend half its body length, to the lazy sunfish catching rays as he leisurely floats along the surface.
This is a technically and musically exciting piece, one that is rarely heard performed with the original instrumentation – a concert experience not to be missed!
Complimentary beer, wine and cheese platters served during intermission.
