Audiences will be drawn in by MGQ’s use of the guitar-family, a set of instruments ranging from classical, baritone, standard and treble guitars that allow for the creation of rich and vibrant tonal textures.

About the program…
This program signifies really what MGQ is all about, celebrating new Australian works specifically written for the guitar family such as our recent commission by Robert Davidson, as well as performing the groundbreaking News from Nowhere, originally commissioned for Guitar Trek back in the early 1990’s.
Together with these contemporary Australian works, we have a deep admiration for time-honored string quartets, piano works and other chamber music and have adapted them for guitar quartet. Much like most of the solo guitar canon, guitarists have relied upon transcriptions and arrangements to fill the void of non-specific guitar music from the Renaissance through to the late Romantic periods. Through this process some of the most loved guitar works ironically were never composed for the instrument, such as the enigmatic work by Albeniz, Asturias. Through our arrangements of Vivaldi, Haydn, Beethoven and Debussy, this concert program aims to not establish new guitar quartet repertoire but more so to allow the voice and beauty of the guitar bring something new to the image of these long-standing established classics.
