Entries Close August 1st

Each year the Melbourne Guitar Foundation hosts a classical guitar competition as part of the Melbourne International Guitar Festival. Entry is open to all ages, with four categories available based on performance standard and AMEB grade achieved. Significant prizes are available in all categories. Each competitor will receive a certificate and performance notes from our adjudicators. Entries close August 1.

Competition Dates:

OPEN category semi-final: September 21, 2018
Intermediate, Advanced: September 22, 2018
Beginner: September 23, 2018
OPEN category final: September 23, 2018

Venue: Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, University of Melbourne


Beginner Category

Up to grade 2 AMEB or equivalent

Up to two pieces can be performed. Time limit is 5 mins.

Intermediate Category

Up to grade 5 AMEB or equivalent

Up to two pieces can be performed. Time limit is 6 mins.

Advanced Category

Up to grade 8 AMEB or equivalent

Up to two pieces can be performed. Time limit is 10 mins. Depending on the number of entries we receive, if we are over-subscribed we may need to hold a preliminary online round. This would be in the form of an audio recording, one piece up to 6 mins in length. Details of which will be confirmed once applications close August 1.

International Concert Artist Competition

1st round: Online, due by August 1.
2nd round: Live in front of a panel. Friday morning, Sept 21, 2018
3rd round: Final on Sunday Sept 23, 2018

RULES

1st round: Online round

Entrants will upload a single take, unedited audio recording of the set work by completing the Competition Entry Form. The set piece is the Courante BWV 995 by J.S. Bach plus an additional free choice. Audio recordings must be one continuous recording, with no added reverb, compression or editing. 10min time limit total.

2nd round: Live panel

Semi-finalists will be required to perform Homenaje a Debussy by Manuel de Falla plus an additional free choice (must be different to online round). Multiple movements may be performed for the free choice piece. Total time limit 10mins.

3rd round: Live concert (open to public)

Entirely free choice. May repeat pieces from previous rounds if desired. 15min time limit.

Judges decisions are final. Competition entry fees are non-refundable.
