2019 Melbourne Guitar Festival Classical Guitar Competition

Each competitor will receive a complimentary ticket to watch the Festival Gala Concert!

Each competitor will receive a certificate, performance notes from our adjudicators (excluding ICAC category) and a video recording of their performance. 

Viewing of the Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced categories is free for the general public. No tickets are required!

Competition

The total prize pool for the performance competition is over $20,000 !  

This performance competition is for all ages and abilities, with categories including Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced and International Concert Artist Competition (ICAC).  

Each competitor will receive a certificate, performance notes from our adjudicators (excluding ICAC category) and a video recording of their performance.  

Entries close March 31st. 

Competition Dates:  

ICAC category semi-final: September 19, 2019 Intermediate, Advanced: September 21, 2019 Beginner: September 22, 2019 ICAC category final: September 22, 2019  

Venue: Eldon Hogan Performing Arts Centre, Xavier College, Kew

   

BEGINNER CATEGORY Up to grade 2 AMEB or equivalent  

Up to two pieces can be performed. Time limit is 5 mins.  

PRIZES: 1st Place – Katoh MCG85S (RRP $699) + $50 Hans Music Voucher + string pack + Tenuto Lite Guitar Support (RRP $65) 2nd Place – $50 Hans Music Voucher + string pack 3rd Place – $50 Hans Music Voucher + string pack  

INTERMEDIATE CATEGORY Up to grade 5 AMEB or equivalent  

Up to two pieces can be performed. Time limit is 6 mins.  

PRIZES: 1st Place –A choice between several high end Katoh guitar series instruments, such as the Katoh DF-69 (RRP $2495) + $50 Hans Music Voucher + string pack + Tenuto Pro Guitar Support (RRP $110) 2nd Place – $50 Hans Music Voucher + string pack 3rd Place – $50 Hans Music Voucher + string pack

ADVANCED CATEGORY Up to grade 8 AMEB or equivalent  

Up to two pieces can be performed. Time limit is 10 mins. 

PRIZES: 1st Place – Concert guitar by Andrew Doriean (RRP $6800) + $100 Hans Music Voucher + string pack + Tenuto Pro Guitar Support (RRP $110) 2nd Place – $50 Hans Music Voucher + string pack 3rd Place – $50 Hans Music Voucher + string pack 

INTERNATIONAL CONCERT ARTIST COMPETITION (ICAC) 1st round: Online, due by March 31st, 2019. 2nd round: Live in front of a panel. Thursday morning, Sept 19, 2019 3rd round: Final on Sunday Sept 22, 2019


RULES for ICAC  

1st round: Online round  

Provide a Google Drive link in the application form which gives access to unedited .mp3 recordings of the following works (please check google drive privacy and sharing settings so we can access these files): 

- Gigue from 2nd Lute Suite, BWV 997 by J. S. Bach. - Free Choice piece(s), maximum length 6 minutes

You will aso be judged on the audio quality of the recordings, so please ensure this is of a high standard.

2nd round: Live panel

Set works:

- Vivo Energico, 4th Movement from Sonata for solo guitar, ‘Omaggio a Boccherini’ Op. 77 by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. - Free Choice piece(s), maximum length 6 minutes

3rd round: Live concert (open to public)

Entirely free choice. May repeat pieces from previous rounds if desired. 15min music time limit (not including tuning etc).  

PRIZES: 1st Place

*Although fees have been negotiated for the concert tour, the Melbourne Guitar Foundation will not take responsibility for 3rd party concert commitments. Every effort will be made by the MGF to ensure a smooth concert tour in 2020, with our full support and assistance behind the winner
